Are You Looking For Work Right Now? If So, Read On…

I did a Coffee Talk last October to focus on “Resume Wow” and standing out in a crowded field of job searchers. If you missed it, you can view it below. (Go here to subscribe to my new YouTube channel to make sure you don’t miss any updates.)

In this session I focused on what I see as major missed opportunities for job seekers to differentiate themselves as experts. Most resumes I read tend to focus on general language related to all service professionals: attention to detail, discrete, self-motivated. The excuse, “I feel I can work for anyone who needs an estate manager,” or worse, “I don’t consider myself to be an expert.”

What’s wrong with this?

Well, as estate managers, we are not all the same. Some of us have years of experience; others are new to the game. Some have worked for hands-on, single property homeowners, while others have worked for globetrotting families with 10+ properties, 25+ staff members and a fully-staffed family office. So my question is this: why are our resumes so similar?

If you’re having trouble standing out from the crowd and attracting the right employer, let me help explain how to change that. Does your resume look something like this?

  • 5-star hospitality concierge service

  • High level of professionalism, adaptability and maturity

  • Discrete and naturally self-motivated

  • Deadline-driven, loyal and accountable

If so, STOP! Don’t send out another submission until your resume paints a more vivid picture of your ideal position, highlights your unique qualifications, and gives recruiters, principals and chiefs of staff a reason to hire you now, to relocate you (if you so choose) and to pay more for your service!

To do this you must ELIMINATE GENERIC WORDING and REPLACE with tangible, memorable and emotionally impactful words, such as:

A line of estate managers wait to interview while sitting against a blue wall

How are you different than any other estate manager?

  • 10 years of proactive luxury home improvement management

  • Six Sigma graduate / LinkedIn Learning Graduate / Be the Ultimate Assistant Graduate / Crestron/Lutron home technology expert

  • Streamlined household management and multi-lingual staff protocol over five global properties

  • Built a highly collaborative team of experts with 10 domestic staff members and over 90 luxury service providers

  • In 2019, successfully managed $900K worth of home improvement contracts as well as an annual household maintenance budget of $1.1M+

  • Provided expert-support for: Fortune 500 CFO, high tech giant, globetrotting CEO, movie industry mogul…

Do you see how this language paints a more accurate picture of the level of your service experience, who you’ve worked for and the type of principal who will appreciate your expertise? Can you see why the right principal or chief of staff will want to hire you immediately (because they don’t want someone else to hire you) and pay you more (since you’re an expert in what they need)? I hope so. If you need help defining your expertise, reach out to me to see if I can help.

Best of luck to you. I hope that 2021 brings you the perfect position with an amazing family for more money than you think you deserve!

Big air hugs,

Kelly
